Preschool Patrol
Starting on the 7th March 2012, the children and staff will be launching the Preschool patrol in the nursery, over a 5 week period the children will be getting out and about in the community learning skills to keep themselves safe.
This will be done with Sarah Murray, Kate Richards and Hannah Tompkins, 8 children will take on the five different challenges throughout the five weeks and gain their certificates upon completion.
A new group of 8 children will take up the challenges as each 5 week block finishes.
Week one, Keeping safe
Road Safety- Staff and children to make a preschool patrol lolly pop sign on the 29th February and discuss road safety during circle time. On the 5th March the staff and children will go for a walk to the local park and back assessing the roads they need to cross.
Focus will be given to
- Stop look and Listen
- Look left look right
- Finding safe places to cross
- Green cross code
Week Two, Knowledge and understanding of the world
Litter Picking –The children and staff will talk at circle time about litter and how dropping it in the streets has an effect on the environment, discuss on the way to the park any litter they see, could it be recycled. Each child will have their own sack and gloves and help to pick up any litter lying around the park.
Focus will be given to
- Recycling
- Wearing protective clothing
- What is safe to pick up and what may hurt you
Week Three, Problem solving numbers and sorting
Car and traffic surveys-The children to make a tick chart with 8 things they would like to look out for whilst observing traffic. The children should be encouraged to talk about types of transport, colour and shape. When back at the nursery look at creating a graph detailing the findings encouraging the children to think about and recall what they saw.
Focus will be given to
- Road safety and keeping a safe distance
- Displaying the findings back at nursery
- Number and colour recognition
Certificates to be given on completion of their graphs.
Week Four, Observation skills
Operation Spring Watch, Children to make binoculars at nursery with junk modeling materials, whilst in the fields at King George the 5th park discuss and look for signs of Spring, draw pictures and collect things they see.
Focus to be given to
- Describing what they see
- Changes to the environment
- Temperature and nature
The children can return back to nursery and create spring displays with photographs and items collected on their walk; children will receive a certificate for their “spring watch” skills.
Week 5, Stranger Danger
The Staff and children will discuss at circle time the importance of staying within sight of adults when out and about. Re iterate the importance of staying safe combining the skills learnt over the past 4 weeks. Walk to the park and allow the children to explore and play remembering to stay within sight of the staff at all times.
Focus to be given to
- Staff Supervision
- Allowing the children to freely play and make choices freely
Sarah to see if a community support officer will join them on a walk, certificates to be handed out back at nursery.
Points to consider.
- Consent forms signed and handed out every five weeks for every child wishing to attend the patrol.
- Risk assessments to be carried out prior to every walk/Outing assessing any changes that need to be made to routes.
- Parents to consent to video/photographic evidence being used on the blog or in the nursery
- EYFS learning outcomes to be clear for all staff, children and parents
- High viz jackets to be sourced
- Blog and website to be updated weekly
- Preschool patrol to have separate contact and outings bag prepared and resourced
- Staff, children and parents to be prepared for the weather, the patrol will venture out in all weathers.
